It doesn’t have to be
like this. Really.
When you first came into your role as a nurse you used to love the fast-paced environment, the adrenaline rush of handling critical cases, and the deep fulfillment of helping patients and their families during some of their most difficult times. Rewarding was an understatement. Your drive and dedication to the profession grew with each shift and each patient.
But recently, something’s different. The energy that came when your alarm went off is now replaced with apathy and sometimes dread as you clock in for each shift. The long hours, constant understaffing, lack of resources, overwhelming bureaucracy, and emotional toll have left you feeling tired, uninspired, and if you're honest with yourself - maybe ready to quit …

When you are honest with yourself and think about your future, it’s pretty clear you can't keep doing this, like this, forever. But when you mull over the possibilities, decision paralysis sets in and you get stuck.
One of the greatest things about nursing (and one of the biggest factors that drew you to the profession in the first place) is the huge variety of opportunities that the profession of nursing can provide you. But now that you’re at your wits end with your current role and you’ve started exploring those options, a ton of questions and doubts start creeping in…
You keep cycling through the options in your mind, never landing on a clear path forward. All you know is that something has to change before you completely burn out and lose all love for the career you worked so hard for.
The truth is
You’re not alone in feeling this way or thinking there’s a better career fit for you.

62% of us are experiencing burnout; from pandemic PTSD, to poor staffing, to healthcare systemic issues–nurses feel it all especially deeply.

A 2023 report revealed that more than half of nurses (56%) leave the profession within their first five years.

We all know (and respect) those OG “career nurses” on the floor, but the reality is that the average length of a nursing career is just 9 years.
There are 3 common myths holding you back from true fulfillment in your career.
You’ll be in a much better position to take control and find a path that truly resonates with you
once you let go of these myths …
I have to go back to school to progress in my career.
While additional education can be hugely valuable, it’s not the only path to professional growth. Many nurses have found success by leveraging their existing skills and exploring new roles within healthcare and outside of healthcare. You don’t need to hit the books again or take on more student loans to have a nursing career you love. The possibilities within nursing are nearly endless, and not all of them require that you add extra letters behind your name.

I can’t stay in my current position if I’m at the end of my rope.
Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you have to jump ship entirely. I get it, you may be feeling beyond burned out and trapped in your current role. You may think the only way forward is to make a drastic change. But I’m here to tell you that you have more options than you might realize.
There are likely untapped opportunities to find renewed passion and purpose right where you are – as well as putting into place some practical, actionable changes that can restore your work-life balance and reignite your spark.
The system has to change before you can be happy.
Waiting for the healthcare system to change is like waiting for a coding patient to revive themselves – it ain’t happening without intervention. Waiting for top-down change can leave you feeling powerless.
It's easy to think that the only way out of burnout is through a complete overhaul of the healthcare system. After all, how much impact can one person have within such a vast, flawed machine?
Our healthcare system is in dire, drastic, long overdue need of a complete revamp. Systemic change is crucial to addressing the burnout crisis in the long run. But this inevitable change is proving to be a slow, drawn-out process. You shouldn't have to live in burnout limbo waiting for a broken system to change.

The truth is, you have the power to make significant changes in your own nursing career and life, regardless of the dysfunctional system around you. You can put yourself first and make decisions now to improve your life and career, without waiting for the system to fix itself.
Hi, I’m Dr. James
Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner & Passionate Multimedia Medial Expert
My path to nursing was unconventional, to say the least. Despite a deep appreciation for the profession instilled by my mother (a pediatric ICU nurse) at a young age, being a gay Biracial kid growing up in the 1980s and 90s in Nebraska coupled with the stigma of being a man in nursing (at that time) stopped me from pursuing my passion. So I tapped into what else I loved and latched onto journalism and media.

With a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism & Mass Communications from Drake University, I spent the first chapter of my career working in radio, TV, marketing, and internal communications for prestigious companies from Tech to the non-profit sector, and even corporate giants like PepsiCo. I thrived in the media world, tackling everything from newscast writing to digital strategy, and loved every minute of it. The thrill of television, the challenge of corporate communications strategy, the buzz of being a part of the first wave of the dot.com boom …
But that entire time, somewhere in the back of my mind, my inner nurse was screaming at me to be let out. I knew it would be a massive regret if I never explored nursing as a career. I did not want to be that guy on my deathbed saying “I wonder if …” In fact, deep down I knew that eventually I’d have to live my truth. Slowly but surely I had been taking night classes to obtain the prerequisites to get into nursing school … ya know, just for fun. Once I nailed that final pre-req, I applied to nursing school, got accepted, and the rest of my nursing career was history. Or so I thought.
After several years of working as a bedside nurse and pursuing my Masters of Science in Nursing to become a Nurse Practitioner, I felt a strong pull back to my media roots. In 2014, a lightbulb went off in my head: why not combine my two passions? I posted my first YouTube video and began regularly creating content that addressed common (and not-so-common) health questions for non-medical folks on social media. “Why is my poop green?” 😂 💩 was the first video on my channel to go viral, and I knew I was on to something.
Since combining my passions, I've had incredible opportunities to create engaging medical content and build community on social media (@DrJamesQSimmons), break down complex topics on TV and radio, and reach massive audiences through podcasting and more. I’ve been featured in the New York Times, ABC News, NBC News, FOX, Scripps News, SiriusXM Radio, LoveLine, Yahoo!, and countless other media outlets. I’m also a very proud Clinical Ambassador for the CDC’s “Let’s Stop HIV Together” program, which empowers communities, partners, and healthcare providers to reduce HIV stigma and promote testing, prevention, and treatment.

Most importantly, I’ve had the joy of becoming the guy you call when you have a thing on your thing, because my specialty is making those ‘things’ less scary and easy to understand for everyone.
Throughout my journey of launching and growing Ask The NP (now @DrJamesQSimmons), and helping other nurses explore their career options, I realized that so many nurses feel stuck. They know there's more out there for them, but they don't know WHAT opportunities exist or HOW to snag them. The constant tug-of-war often leads to nurses leaving the profession altogether.

But guess what? As a nurse, the possibilities to weave your expertise into a career that sets your soul on fire are endless. That's why I've been on a mission to create an immersive experience that guides nurses through aligning their passions and skills, exploring the vast array of career paths available to them, and taking the guesswork out of the steps they need to make their dreams a reality. Because let's face it, the world needs more happy nurses living their best lives!
And I’m here to show you how…

Stabilizing the Patient

Now that you’ve given report, it’s time to stabilize the patient (remember, that’s you!). In Module 2, we’ll focus on providing immediate relief from the burnout that’s weighing you down. Think of it as your own personal crash cart, packed with all the tools you need to jumpstart your well-being – at work and in your life. Let’s work on giving yourself the care you so generously provide others so you can create space for greater impact and change in your own life.
You’ll use the following tools:
- Stability Assessment: Diagnose your current state of well-being and identify the areas that need a little TLC. It’s time to put yourself first!
- Your Weekly Care Plan: Create a personalized treatment plan for self-care success. We’ll help you create a realistic plan, monitor your progress each week, and celebrate your wins along the way. And I promise, this ain’t just a prescription for bi-weekly hot yoga (unless of course, that’s your thing!)
To School or Not to School … That is the Question.
You’ve assessed your current situation and taken steps to stabilize yourself. Now it’s time to look to the future. In Module 3, we’ll tackle that age-old nursing question: should you go back to school?
Before you start filling out those BSN, NP, CRNA, or even PhD/DNP applications, let’s take a closer look at your unique career goals. You’ll use the following tools:

Stethoscopes & Soundbites - Becoming A Media Expert

It’s time to take your rightful place in the spotlight! Have you ever noticed how nurses are rarely featured as media experts? The latest research shows that media outlets look to nurses to be their health experts only 2% of the time, yet we are the most trusted profession as voted by the American public 22 years running. We also make up the largest segment of the healthcare workforce.
It’s time to change that narrative and show the world the incredible knowledge and insights you have to offer as an expert. Whether you’re looking to stick with clinical care or explore options outside of the hospital, becoming an expert in the media can be a creative and fulfilling way to supplement your career while making a positive impact on so many people’s lives.
You’ll use the following tools:
- Pitch Perfect: Journalists receive as many as 10 pitches every single day. Learn how to craft your message, nail your value proposition, and create a compelling pitch that showcases your unique perspective and expertise, making you indispensable to all types of media outlets and journalists.
- Pitch Template: We’ll help you plug your message and expertise into our simple, proven template guaranteed to get the attention of journalists and producers.
- Resource Guide: Access our curated list of the most pressing topics you can advocate for in the media.
Your Care Plan
It’s time to put on the pacer pads, charge up, and get ready to create the ultimate care plan to resuscitate your professional future.
